(1785) Bar Copper, Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4, AU50 PCGS. The interlocking USA on the obverse, and the 13 bars on the reverse, provide a uniquely American design that likely first appeared in New York late in 1785. Newspaper reports in November and December 1785 describe the "new and curious kind of coppers" that are "similar to Continental buttons without eyes," having USA on one side and 13 stripes on the other side. Like all of the original Bar coppers, this piece was probably struck in Birmingham, England. A downward projection from the right end of the second stripe (or upward from the left end of the 12th stripe) is diagnostic of the original pieces, unlike the later Bolen copies. This pleasing example has lovely olive-brown surfaces with sea-green and maroon toning. Listed on page 76 of the 2018 Guide Book.
