1789 TOKEN Mott Token, Thick Planchet, Plain Edge AU58 PCGS. The northwest corner of the grandfather clock has a prominent break, as made. The eagle is softly struck, as is usual for this late die state. Immaculately preserved, showing lovely chocolate-brown patina that is free from verdigris. A pleasing representative of this popular and enigmatic token, which despite the 1789 date is now believed by some to have been issued during the Hard Times era of the late 1830s, serving as a business card for the firm that was founded in 1789. Others feel that the token was made close to the time of the 1789 date on the reverse. A detailed discussion of the Mott token appears at www.coins.nd.edu and explains different sides of the Mott token debate. Jordan Mott was a New York gold and silversmith who was born in 1768 and died in 1840. Listed on page 76 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 13 in 58 (1 in 58+), 39 finer (6/17).
