1694 1/2 P Carolina Elephant Token, PROPRIETORS, Hodder 2-F, W-12120, R.6, VF30 NGC. The usually encountered Elephant token is a British affair with the inscription GOD PRESERVE LONDON around a shield on the reverse. However, a few rare examples have American inscriptions: GOD PRESERVE NEW ENGLAND 1694 and GOD PRESERVE CAROLINA AND THE LORD'S PROPRIETORS. The first of the Carolina pieces had Proprietors misspelled as PROPRIETERS. After a small quantity was coined, the engraver corrected the word by punching an O over the errant E. The present tan and steel-brown example illustrates the correction with the E clearly visible under the O. This piece has a few trivial marks but possesses exceptional surfaces for the grade. Listed on page 49 of the 2018 Guide Book.
