(1790) PENNY Albany Church Penny, D Above CHURCH, W-8500, R.7, VG10 NGC. The First Presbyterian Church of Albany, New York had 1,000 coppers stamped in 1790 to take the place of worn-out coppers and counterfeits received in the church's offering plates. These uniface coppers were inscribed CHURCH PENNY, some with a capital D above CHURCH, others without the letter. About equal numbers are known today, suggesting that 500 of each variety were minted in 1790. This chocolate and steel-brown example is a little wavy and has a few marks on each side. The D and CHURCH are complete while the script PENNY is mostly visible. Listed on page 77 of the 2018 Guide Book.
