Flying Eagle Cents
1858 1C Small Letters MS66 PCGS. Low Leaves Reverse. Open E in ONE. The size of the lettering is an obvious difference between Small and Large Letter types but the lettering is also more blocky on the Small Letters, an indication this type was produced by Anthony Paquet rather than James Longacre. While the two types are equally available in lower grades, the Small Letters coins are much scarcer in high grades (such as this piece). This example displays thick mint luster and each side shows a surprising amount of reddish patina for a copper-nickel product. The strike details are just a tad soft on the eagle's breast feathers, but strong elsewhere. Population: 16 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer (6/17).
