Early Dimes
1798/97 10C 16 Stars Reverse, JR-1, R.3, MS64 PCGS. Exhibiting 13 stars on the obverse and 16 stars on the reverse, JR-1 is believed to be the first 1798 dime minted, with the reverse die previously appearing on 1797 BD-1 quarter eagles. The overdated obverse is from a die that was engraved in 1797 and intended for use that year, but never placed in service. This 1798/7 JR-1 and the JR-2 from the same obverse die are the closest we can get to a "1797" Heraldic Eagle dime. This late die state piece has extensive clash marks on the obverse, while the reverse exhibits light clash marks and other die defects. Both sides have brilliant and frosty silver luster with peripheral iridescent toning. Diagonal adjustment marks on the reverse should aid future owners in tracing the provenance. Population: 8 in 64, 6 finer (6/17).
