Seated Dimes
1871-S 10C F-102, R.5, MS66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. The Eliasberg catalog called this piece "probably the finest known or tied with it"; it is now confirmed to be the finest known. The 1871-S Seated dime is a rarity in any Mint State grade, and the Eliasberg Premium Gem is the only example certified finer than MS65. Recent auction appearances of Gems have been few and far between, with the most recent in our October 2014 sale of the Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part II, which realized $11,750. The Eliasberg coin is one of the few finest-known Seated Liberty coins that Gardner did not have. The extreme rarity and importance of the current offering cannot be overstated.
The surfaces show smooth, satiny luster and a blush of light champagne toning over well-struck design elements. A loupe reveals only a few tiny ticks on the obverse but none that detract. Housed in a green label holder with a well-deserved CAC endorsement.
Ex: W.F. Greany to J.M. Clapp (1/1904); Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 1193.
