Mercury Dimes
1916-D 10C MS66+ Full Bands PCGS. The 1916-D Mercury dime is the one true "stopper" in the series in all grades. It is also popular as one of the key issues in the early "Renaissance of American coinage" period, which saw three denominations get new designs in 1916. For the Registry Set collector, the acquisition of the '16-D in MS66 or MS67 Full Bands is of unparalleled importance. PCGS reports two dozen Full Bands coins in MS66, including a pair of Plus-graded examples (one offered here), with eight MS67s finer. Many of these pieces have appeared at auction in recent decades, although we consider it likely that at least a few resubmissions skew the published population. The NGC census in these top grades is almost insignificant, with only four and three coins reported in MS66 and MS67 Full Bands, respectively (6/17).
Recent auction appearances of the 1916-D in MS66 Full Bands have yielded impressive results. Our Permanent Auction Archives for the last ten years show prices realized for such coins ranging from $43,000 (2009) to $94,000 (2015). The growing demand for these top-quality pieces is immediately apparent.
We handled the other PCGS-graded MS66+ Full Bands coin in our April 2014 Central States Signature event, where it realized $88,125. The present coin -- its "sister piece" with the coveted Plus designation -- is technically equal to it, but a lack of the heavy toning that its predecessor featured allows the luster of this coin to shine more brightly, and the eye appeal to be more inviting. Additional attributes of this piece include sharp peripheral definition and luminous mint luster. There is a hint of champagne color on each side, and a loupe reveals bits of olive and russet toning at the borders. A high-end example of the first-year key in the Mercury dime series, this piece is one of the most important "Renaissance"-era coins in this year's ANA event.
