Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, VF30 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/5. This golden-gray O-101a representative is well-detailed and boasts complete rims, even along the lower-right obverse where the dentils usually blend into the field (the rim is weak in this location but intact). The surfaces are smooth and problem-free. Some adjustment marks are seen on the central portion of Liberty's portrait, although the peripheries are devoid of the same. Although O-101 and -101a are listed first in the Parsley reference, new research by Steve Tompkins indicates that this variety was 7th in line for production in 1794. Tompkins' die numbers are listed by order of use in his reference Early United States Half Dollar, Volume 1.
