Proof Kennedy Half Dollars
1964 50C Accented Hair, FS-401, PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. About 100,000 of the 4 million Kennedy half dollar proofs struck in the series' first year were of the Type One, Accented Hair variety. That equates to just 2.5% of the mintage. The story is that the former First Lady did not approve of the portrait details upon inspection, and the design was subsequently modified. The two strands of hair above above the ear are the most easily distinguished markers for the variety. Each side of this Registry-quality proof is profoundly contrasted with jet-black fields and frosted motifs. Examples of this caliber are seldom offered. Population: 17 in 68 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (6/17).
