Proof Morgan Dollars
1903 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Ex: Chappell Collection. Due to a change in the Mint's proof die-making process, proof 1903 dollars are extremely rare with any degree of cameo contrast. No Ultra Cameos exist, and NGC has seen only a half dozen Cameos in all grades. The Cameo Census includes one PR66, two PR67s, and three PR68s (6/17). With no numerically finer pieces reported by either service even in the non-Cameo category, this coin is indisputably tied for the finest 1903 proof known. The 1903 proof dollar is frequently seen with a poor strike, but this example is exempt from that norm, showing bold central definition in addition to the virtually perfect preservation. The untoned surfaces yield stark white-on-black contrast.
