Proof Gold Dollars
1860 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Mint records indicate that 154 proof gold dollars were struck in 1860, although it is possible that not all were distributed to collectors. Recent estimates of the survival rate indicate that likely only 25 to 35 pieces are extant in all grades. The combined PCGS and NGC certified population of 47 pieces is likely inflated by resubmissions. This Gem Cameo is among the finer-known examples, showing a full strike and stark field-motif contrast. Warm golden color complements a lack of noteworthy surface imperfections. We have not offered a Cameo proof since our January 2013 FUN Signature sale, where a PR66 Cameo NGC coin realized more than $20,500. The present representative is nearly as fine. Population: 3 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (6/17).
