Proof Gold Dollars
1874 G$1 PR63 PCGS. All one needs to know to grasp the rarity of the proof 1874 gold dollar is to look at the mintage: 20 coins. PCGS estimates that there are only 10-12 survivors, which is in line with certified population figures if one or two resubmissions are reflected. PCGS and NGC combined have seen 12 submissions of this date in all grades (6/17). A single coin is housed in the Smithsonian Institution. Privately held examples rarely come up for auction. In more than two decades, we have previously offered an example of only five occasions, the last of which was in our January 2013 FUN Signature sale. The present Select example is sharply struck and reflective with modest cameo contrast on each side. No significant contact marks are seen.
