Classic Quarter Eagles
1838-C $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 20. A mere 7,880 pieces were struck of the 1838-C quarter eagle. Only 150-200 pieces are believed extant in all grades today with a surprising number of AU and BU coins known, suggesting that a small hoard of high grade pieces was dispersed at one time, however, few of these will reach the Select category. The surfaces are bright and semiprooflike with medium reddish-gold color. This particular piece is easily traced by a tiny black spot under the eagle's left (facing) wingtip. It has sharply defined centers but several of the peripheral stars show slightly weak centrils. A few scattered marks are mostly confined to the obverse, these being responsible for the assigned grade. The devices show light satiny luster. Census: 3 in 63, 0 finer (6/17).
