Proof Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1889 $3 PR65 Cameo NGC. It is likely that all of the 129 specimens minted in 1889 were sold considering that additional proofs were requested in December. Those would have been among the very last three dollar gold coins ever struck in this country. The denomination was abolished the following year. In their 2005 book on this series, Dave Bowers and Doug Winter write: "Proofs of this date are generally regarded as among the rarest of this era, certification data notwithstanding."
This enchanting Gem Cameo proof has profoundly mirrored, orange-peel surfaces and thickly frosted devices that generate stark contrast throughout. A few specks in the obverse fields and next to the 3 are minimal for the assigned grade. Census: 8 in 65 Cameo, 7 finer (6/17).
