Early Eagles
1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-7, R.3, XF45 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. Die crumble occurs on the dentils near stars 1 and 2. The reverse is lightly clashed. Obverse 5 has Small Stars and an irregular date, while Reverse C has S(TATES) positioned left over the cloud and the star away from the eagle's beak. According to Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties (2006), this is the thirdmost available early eagle after the 1799 BD-10 and 1801 BD-2. Approximately 250 to 350 examples survive from a mintage of 10,000 to 15,000 coins.
This high-end Choice XF ten dollar features bold strike detail on the stars, portrait, and wing feathers. A hint of reddish-patina combines with partial luster in the protected areas of the design, namely the obverse stars and reverse legends. There are a few small pinscratches around the obverse periphery and scattered marks throughout, none that can diminish the appeal of this attractive, numismatically significant coin. Housed in a green label holder.
