Liberty Eagles
1870-CC $10 -- Harshly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. The Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins sums up the importance of the 1870-CC when it says: "As the first eagle from the Carson City Mint, the 1870-CC issue is one of the most popular dates in the entire series." All things Carson City are in constant and unceasing demand, first-year issues even more so. However, only 5,908 pieces were struck at the Nevada mint in its first year of operation, and about 45 to 60 examples survive.
This CC ten dollar retains good detail, but the surfaces are somewhat muted. Abrasions on each side are expected of a coin that circulated out West. Although NGC notes that this piece has been "harshly cleaned," we find that to be a bit harsh in itself. The cleaning is no better or worse than what is so often encountered, and it should not detract from the absolute rarity of this offering.
