Liberty Eagles
1882-CC $10 AU58 PCGS. Variety 2-A. Misplaced date digits are seen within the dentils below the date. Eagle output at the Carson City mint fell by nearly 75% between 1881 and 1882, with production shifting to half eagles and double eagles. Only 6,764 ten dollar gold pieces were struck and most of them were put into circulation. Few collectors, if any, bothered saving the 1882-CC for posterity, as mintmark collecting was not yet in vogue. High-grade survivors like this near-Mint coin are the result of happenstance and few are known in better condition. The devices are boldly struck with softness limited to the middle curls and olive-leaves. Friction is imperceptible. Each side is awash in swirling luster that gives this piece the look of an even higher graded coin. Population: 22 in 58 (1 in 58+), 3 finer (6/17).
