Liberty Double Eagles
1852-O $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. Type One New Orleans double eagles are a fascinating and challenging subset of the Liberty Head series. All of the dates are at least moderately scarce, and several are in the rare-to-impossible range. The early 1850s O-Mint twenties offer the most opportunities for collectors, although they, too, are prized in their own right. Nearly all of the survivors are circulated, most in the VF to XF range, with enough AU coins to satisfy higher-grade collections.
The present Choice About Uncirculated example shows only light surface chatter and no major marks. Rich-gold patina displays hints of orange around the raised elements, and enough mint luster survives to easily justify the AU55 designation. Census: 140 in 55 (2 in 55+★), 109 finer (6/17).
