Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301 AU58 PCGS. There is something going on with the date on this Cherrypicker's variety, struck from a distinctive die pair, but most likely the date is incorrectly diagnosed as a 3/2 overpunching. The anomalies are interesting nonetheless. Traces of repunching on the 1 are perhaps more convincing than the slanted artifact in the lower loop of 3, which could be the remnant of a misplaced digit or simply die damage.
This near-Mint example is busy with surface chatter but still lustrous and attractive. The strike lacks definition beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing, but it is otherwise satisfactory for the assigned grade. Faint orange accents add eye appeal to the medium-gold fields and devices. Overdate or not, the 1853/'2' is listed in the Guide Book and it is a necessity for the variety collector.
