Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301, Breen-7162, AU58 PCGS. The strike is particularly sharp on this near-Mint 1853/"2" double eagle. Liberty's hair and bun are sharp, with just a bit of high point rub. Mint luster beams strongly throughout both sides. The so-called 2 beneath the 3 is an odd artifact resembling an angled double line or die defect. A diagnostic die chip beneath the R in LIBERTY and faint recutting on 1 in the date make it an interesting variety nonetheless.
Relatively few marks are present on this near-Mint example. Liberty's portrait has two angled abrasions visible with a glass, but they are minor. Pleasing wheat-gold color adds to the substantial eye appeal. Population: 22 in 58 (2 in 58+), 7 finer (6/17).
