Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301, Breen-7162, AU58 NGC. While most double eagle experts deny the slanted "artifact" in the bottom loop of the 3 is actually part of an underdigit 2, much less lip service is given to the equally curious lines that seem to confirm repunching at the lower upright of 1 on the so-called 1853/2 twenties. A large raised dot below the R of LIBERTY adds a third identifier for the interesting and controversial obverse.
Those discussions aside, the present example offers borderline Uncirculated quality for this appealing Type One double eagle. Attractive orange-gold color with reddish-gold accents at the shield provide visual allure, and mint luster gleams brightly from both sides. Without doubt, the numerous tiny marks and surface chatter account for the assigned grade.
