Liberty Double Eagles
1861-S $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Republic, The Gilded Age Collection. The existence of roughly 40 to 55 Mint State 1861-S double eagles is a direct result of the sinking of the S.S. Republic in October 1865. Had the coins not gone down with the ship, they would have certainly entered into domestic circulation, been exported, or melted. High-grade examples make up only about 1% of the surviving population of perhaps 4,000 to 6,000 pieces. This impressive S-mint offering is highly lustrous and frosty with light yellow-gold coloration. The obverse is decidedly better-struck than most Type One twenties, but the reverse strike is what sets this example apart from its peers. Although lightly marked, the surfaces are far more appealing than the grade implies. Population: 11 in 61, 8 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 5 finer (6/17).
Ex: J.B. Worthington Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 5/2005), lot 418; Gilded Age Collection (Stack's Bowers, 8/2014), lot 12024, which realized $25,850.
