Liberty Double Eagles
1874-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 2-A Elegant eye appeal is a characteristic that evades most surviving examples of the 1874-CC. The coins were treated unceremoniously in commerce, and those that survived unscathed were often played with and "improved" over the years by various parties, wittingly or unwittingly. This nearly Uncirculated Carson City double eagle evaded all those obstacles, preserving its original surfaces, color, and luster for more than 140 years. Luminous green and red-gold surfaces are well-struck with trivial friction and a predictable number of scattered abrasions. There are merely 22 better-condition submissions at PCGS (6/17).
