Liberty Double Eagles
1879-O $20 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. The 1879-O twenty is one of the most immediately recognizable rarities of all U.S. gold coins. This is due in part to its small mintage (only 2,325 coins), but it is also a significant condition rarity and not usually seen above the VF level. While this piece does show evidence of cleaning, the surfaces are remarkably smooth for this normally heavily abraded issue. The fields, especially on the reverse, retain generous portions of the semiprooflike finish in the protection regions. The only abrasions that can reliably be used as pedigree identifiers are marks to the right of the eagle's head, and in the field just in front of Liberty's mouth.
