Liberty Double Eagles
1902 $20 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1902 double eagle stands out with a tiny mintage of only 31,140 pieces and a proportionately low Mint State population. In their gold coin Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth write: "The 1902 double eagle is one of the most difficult issues after 1900 to locate. The Smithsonian lacks an example." This is especially true in the finer Mint State grades. The 1902 frequently comes with heavy abrasions that prevent a grade any finer than MS62. The present Select coin is scarce, and finer pieces are exceedingly rare. The strike is sharp throughout each side and there is no evidence of die lapping. Softly frosted orange-gold mint luster produces warm eye appeal and is only minimally marked. Population: 81 in 63 (2 in 63+), 10 finer. CAC: 8 in 63, 3 finer (6/17).
