High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. Beautifully colored in honey-gold shades, the surfaces of this impressive Select specimen are uncommonly distraction-free for the assigned grade. There are few abrasions, none of which are overly conspicuous, and the impressively bold devices are fully three dimensional. A fin, or wire rim, around the edge of the coin was caused by metal extruding through the narrow gap between the collar and the die when the coin was struck. About 80% of known specimens show this feature, which the Mint finally eradicated by modifying the dimensions and upset angle of the planchets. Only 12,367 High Relief double eagles were struck.
