Territorial Gold
1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. -- Obverse Scratched -- NGC Details. XF. K-6, R.4. Target Reverse. Kagin-6 is the usual fifty dollar Assay Office ingot variety seen from the Curtis, Perry & Ward contract coinage. The predecessor to the San Francisco Mint, the United States Assay Office in San Francisco produced large numbers of octagonal fifty dollar gold ingots to serve the local economy during the Gold Rush. Many of these hefty "slugs," as they were called, were later deposited as bullion at the San Francisco Mint after 1854, to be recoined into regular federal eagles and double eagles.
This representative has rich olive-gold coloration with hints of deeper orange-gold in the obverse recesses. A cluster of scratches in the fields next to AMERICA prevents a numeric grade from NGC, although the detail is well within the XF level. A still-pleasing example of this intriguing Gold Rush relic. Listed on page 396 of the 2018 Guide Book.
