California Fractional Gold
1854 $1 Liberty Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-529, R.9, AU58 NGC. This is a very rare opportunity for the collector of California fractionals. This gold dollar variety is distinguished from other, similar ones by the presence of two stars between GOLD and DERI on the reverse. This is a single-use die. The discovery coin was found by Jay Rowe in September 1980, and that coin is an AU50. Since that time, two others have been discovered -- one at each of the major services. The surfaces are bright with rich reddish patina over the otherwise yellow-gold. The strike is solid throughout and there are no detracting abrasions or scratches present.
