Coins of Hawaii
1887 TOKEN Grove Ranch Plantation. 12 1/2 Cents, MS62 Brown PCGS. M. TE-17. The 1886 and 1887 Grove Ranch Plantation tokens were produced at the end of the private money era in Hawaii, and the 1887 is one of the rarest of all the Hawaiian token issues. The tokens were struck by blacksmiths to provide the 110 employees of the plantation with a medium of exchange they could use at the company store. Only five examples have been certified, and this piece is tied for finest-seen (6/17).
The coin offered here exhibits sharply detailed central design elements and glossy walnut-brown surfaces with a few tiny planchet flaws, as struck. Many fine die striations are evident in the reverse fields and overall eye appeal is outstanding. Listed on page 425 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 62 Brown, 0 finer (6/17).
