1871 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-1140, Pollock-1282, R.8, PR65 PCGS Secure. CAC. William Barber's implementation of James Longacre's design for the Seated dollar. The obverse shows an Indian Princess, facing left, hand on globe, two flags behind (one with 22 stars), Liberty pole behind with Phyrgian cap atop the pole. Thirteen stars around arranged around the border, date below. The reverse shows a complex agricultural wreath with 1 DOLLAR within, the word STANDARD in small letters around the upper border, a.k.a. the "Standard Silver" reverse of 1870. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Also struck in silver with a reeded edge (four known), copper with a reeded edge (four known), copper with a plain edge (five known), aluminum with a reeded edge (unique), and aluminum with a plain edge (unique). It is believed these pieces were part of complete sets from the half dime through the silver dollar.
For many years it was believed that only one Judd-1140 existed. This particular piece was off the market for more than 40 years, and the background of the piece in the Kentucky Collection is unknown. It is clear now that there are three plain edge silver pieces extant. USPatterns.com lists the pedigrees as:

1. PR62 PCGS. Farouk; Magnolia Collection (Spink/Smythe, 5/2011), lot 18, which sold for $54,625; Simpson.
2. PR65 PCGS. Sale of the '70s (Kagin's, 11/1973), lot 806; ANA Auction (Stacks Bowers, 8/2014), lot 13289. The present specimen.
3. PR63 NGC. Kentucky Collection.

This is a richly toned and deeply reflective example. The margins on each side are sea-green and rose-gray, while the centers are much lighter, in places suggesting original brilliance. The devices are lightly, but obviously frosted, but perhaps not quite enough for a Cameo designation. This is far and away the finest of the three known pieces of this major pattern rarity.
