1893 $1 MS65 PCGS. An elusive issue in Gem condition, a situation due not only to the small mintage (378,000 pieces) but also to the apparent circulation of much of the mintage and the poor strike quality noted on many Mint State coins. Fortunately, a minority of Uncirculated examples do show a sharp strike, the present coin among those felicitous few. The eagle's breast feathers are articulated, and only slight softness shows above the ear. Brilliant luster cascades from each side of this brilliant, untoned Gem, and the surfaces are remarkably abrasion-free. PCGS has certified only six finer coins, NGC four (6/17).
