Trio of 1938 Jefferson Nickel Experimental Plaster Casts. Two obverse and one reverse impressions are offered, each 8.5 inches in diameter: 1938 Obverse depicts Thomas Jefferson facing left with his braided hair out of view behind his neck; LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRUST right, and the date below. Exceptional quality in white plaster without chips on the face. 1938 Obverse with Jefferson facing left, LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRUST to the left, and the date below. Somewhat soiled but with no chips on the face. Once mounted with the following, with two holes in each piece. 1938 Reverse depicts a highly detailed motif of Monticello with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above, and MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS below. Also soiled and with two holes for mounting, this piece exhibits a small chip on the border at 2:30. The responsible artist is not known to us, but these were among 195 pairs of plaster casts that the U.S. Treasury received in response to their design contest.
