Early Half Dollars
1806/5 50C O-103, Large Stars, T-8, R.2, XF40 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/1. Struck from an obverse left over from 1805, the tip of the flag from an underdigit 5 peeks out from beneath the knob of an overpunched 6. This is an attractive silver-gray example with golden-tan overtones and traces of mint luster in protected areas. The smooth surfaces show a few small marks but sharply defined motifs and fewer than the expected number of abrasions. Population (All 1806/5 Large Stars varieties): 23 in 40, 53 finer (6/17).
