Early Half Dollars
1806 50C Draped Bust, Knob 6, O-106, T-4, R.4 -- Engraved -- Uncertified. This interesting engraved half dollar reads GENL. A. JACKSON -- TO -- J. THOMAS JANY 11 1828. It is done in the style of similarly engraved coins we have seen that fit the genre of coins that were "presentation pieces" from high-ranking military officers to valued officers or important individuals. Often, the recipients had them engraved by a local jeweler as a pocket piece or memento.
The present example may be a political piece, since Andrew Jackson launched his successful presidential bid in January, 1828. We have not been able to identify J. Thomas with any amount of certainty. There is a "J. Thomas" who appears on a congressional roll call from the time period, but additional information is sparse. The successful bidder will enjoy researching this historic piece and gathering more information about its origin. The host coin is a moderately circulated Overton-106 half dollar with traces of golden-gray toning and smooth wear.
