Bust Half Dollars
1814 50C O-102, R.2, MS61 NGC. Attractive album toning with concentric shades of forest-green, blue, and reddish-gold provides nice eye appeal for this lustrous, Mint State half. The stars are well clear of the edge, which indicates an early die state. Struck from rusted dies, the coin shows evidence of the Mint's die work to minimize defects. Obverse die lines criss-cross above the clasp in an attempt to remove rust -- diagnostic of the O-102 variety. The upper obverse is lightly struck across the cap, but the eagle's wing plumage is sharp, with no evidence of a sinking die that reduces feather detail in later die stages. Letters from LIBERTY are boldly visible within the shield recesses and beneath the adjacent wing from die clashing.
