Bust Half Dollars
1817 50C O-113a, R.4, AU58 PCGS. The Peterson Bust half reference notably identifies the O-113 variety by a short, freestanding die line that touches the eagle's beak as if "the eagle has a worm." The late die state characteristics are less descriptive -- but more important -- since an advanced die stage is much scarcer than the early one. A slanting die crack through UNITED determines the O-113a die state. Other die cracks are numerous both on the obverse and reverse, as is minor buckling of the obverse beneath Liberty's chin. Patches of russet-tan toning appear at the margins in varying intensities. Nearly full mint luster remains on this near-Mint coin, which displays sharp eye appeal and a strong strike.
