Early Dollars
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves, B-2, BB-20, R.3, XF40 PCGS. A glossy representative that has blended gunmetal-gray patina. The surfaces are nothing short of outstanding for such a large early silver coin, with no rim bumps, scratches, or nicks that distract. A thin pin scratch extends up from the eagle's beak to the right and this is the only identifying mark we see. Liberty's lower hair curls have strong definition. The left side stars are noticeably thinner than those on the right side and there is a thin die scratch near the inside points of the fourth star, and these are the diagnostics for the die marriage. The berries are arranged 9x10, and the eagle and wreath show careful, delicate die engraving. A scarcer variety, Bowers wrote "rare above EF" about BB-20 in his 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. For the collector, it would be difficult to imagine a more desirable coin for the grade, with such superlative surfaces and attractive toning, a combination which is seldom seen. An opportunity for the variety collector who demands eye appeal.
