1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, XF45 PCGS. Bowers Die State IV. The die lump between IC in AMERICA extends along the curve of the C. The obverse and reverse dies are unique to this variety, identified by wide spacing of TE in STATES and the leaf under S1. This Choice XF dollar is undoubtedly among the finer obtainable examples, as higher-graded BB-65 dollars are very rare. The strike is needle-sharp, particularly on the right-hand stars, Liberty's hair curls, and the eagle's wing feathers. Partial detail is even apparent on the upper breast. Attractive violet-gray patina covers minimally marked surfaces with accents of blue, green, and peach-gold. Minor file marks occur around the obverse rim.
