Early Dollars
1796 $1 Small Date, Small Letters, B-1, BB-66, R.4, XF45 NGC. Six die varieties of the 1796 silver dollars are known, with B-1 and three others generally available without undue difficulty. The other two (B-3 and B-6) are both extremely rare with only a few pieces known. The present scarcer variety 1796 dollar displays rich lavender patina with caramel-gold and gunmetal-blue undertones. The microgranular surfaces are void of consequential contact. The die state is early with no evidence of lapping, cracks, or other die characteristics. Later states are identified by traces of die lapping on the reverse.
