Early Dollars
1800 $1 AMERICAI, B-19, BB-192, R.2, AU50 PCGS. Ex: Hesselgesser. Bowers Die State I. A very scarce early die state without clashing or die cracks. The famous AMERICAI Guide Book variety derives its name from a bold vertical mark after AMERICA that Bowers describes as "... perhaps from a punch or from a stray piece of metal during the die making process ... ." The reverse die was employed on BB-191 and BB-192, with the former coins being considerably scarcer (R.4). The strike detail throughout this lightly circulated early dollar is razor-sharp on the stars, wing feathers, and legends in particular. Each side displays light golden-russet patina over silvery-gray surfaces with undistracting wispy marks.
