Gobrecht Dollars
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Coin Alignment, Pollock-65, R.1 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (center of Liberty's head is opposite the D in DOLLAR). Die State D. This is the most easily recognized die state in the Gobrecht series: an angling die clash mark is seen above the eagle's wing, pointing toward AT in STATES. Years ago it was believed this was a die scratch, but overlays of the obverse over the reverse convinced John Dannreuther that it was an angling die clash mark created by the drapery in the skirt of Liberty. This coin is obviously cleaned. The surfaces are still bright from hairlining. However, the devices are evenly worn and there are no more than the expected number of handling marks one would expect from 30 points of circulation.
