Seated Dollars
1872-S $1 AU50 PCGS. This 1872-S Seated dollar was struck during the year that Germany abandoned the silver standard and National Gold Bank notes, fully backed by gold, appeared in California for the first time. There was little need for new silver dollars at a time when their melt value was plummeting and specie payments continued in abeyance. Only 9,000 silver dollars were struck in San Francisco in this year. This issue is, nonetheless, the only S-mint Seated dollar from the 1870s that collectors stand a chance of obtaining -- the 1870-S is a great rarity, the 1871-S is nonexistent, the 1873-S is unknown. This AU coin shows attractive eye appeal over silver-white surfaces with only scattered circulation marks, a great collector-grade coin in an underrated series.
