Classic Quarter Eagles
1839-D $2 1/2 XF40 PCGS. Winter 1-A, Variety 26, R.3. Always in demand as the first year of issue of the denomination and the only Classic Head quarter eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, the 1839-D is moderately scarce. Doug Winter estimates 200 to 250 pieces survive. This XF example is finely granular with olive-gold patina, subtle orange accents, and sharp obverse devices. The reverse is the variety with a weak branch stem over D in the denomination, and disconnected olive leaves from die lapping. The rims are full, strong, and unmarked with only tiny ticks that visit the smooth surfaces. Population: 19 in 40, 100 finer (6/17).
