Liberty Quarter Eagles
1840-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. This is a lovely, original example of the first Liberty Head quarter eagle struck at the Charlotte Mint. Both sides show rich green-gold color with just slight friction over the remarkably well-struck motifs. None of the usual heavy abrasions are present, and the eye appeal is quite gratifying for the grade. Only 12,822 coins were struck, and it is believed that fewer than 225 examples survive, most of which grade no finer than XF. Census: 37 in 55 (1 in 55+★), 46 finer (6/17).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2015), lot 6065.
