Liberty Quarter Eagles
1851-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. In the Charlotte quarter eagle series, the mintage of the 1851-C (14,923 pieces) is not unusually low, although the date is scarcer than may be believed. Southern gold specialist Doug Winter estimates that only 160 to 210 examples survive in all grades, and these mostly in VF or XF condition. This AU coin is conditionally scarce. Smooth straw-gold surfaces retain elements of luster in the protected regions, and there are no distracting abrasions. The usual strike weakness on the high central points of the eagle are not bothersome. Census: 14 in 53, 49 finer (6/17).
