Early Half Eagles
1800 $5 BD-4, R.4, VF30 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a, perfect reverse. The M in AMERICA is recut, initially placed too far right and then repunched, simplifying the attribution of this variety. Of the 15,000 to 30,000 half eagles struck bearing the 1800 date, perhaps 5,000 to 7,500 pieces were from the BD-4 die pair. The Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties reference (2006) puts forth a survival estimate of 125 to 175 coins. This pleasing VF30 example has deep green and orange-gold tones. Overall definition is strong with blending over the hair curls, fletchings, neck, and tailfeathers.
