Classic Half Eagles
1837 $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6511, McCloskey 1-A, R.4. Large Date, Block 8. The Mint struck 207,121 Classic Head half eagles in 1837. Three varieties are known -- two with a Large Date and Block 8, and one with a Small Date, Script 8. McCloskey 1-A is distinguished by the thin forecurl and is considerably scarcer than the other Large Date, Block 8 variant. All 1837 five dollar gold pieces are rare in Mint State. This MS61 example has yellow-gold coloration and full strike definition. Lightly scattered marks do not distract. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 10 in 61, 28 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 13 finer (6/17).
