Classic Half Eagles
1838-C $5 AU50 PCGS. Breen-6516, Repunched 5, Variety 2, R.5. This is by far the rarer 1838-C half eagle variety, showing the 5 in the denomination repunched. The '38-C is a one-year Classic Head type in the Charlotte half eagle series, although it is usually obtainable for a price in circulated grades. This AU coin shows smooth orange-gold surfaces and well-detailed motifs. A heavy diagonal die crack bisects the reverse from the olive leaves to the eagle's right (facing) wingtip, identifying the usual late die state.
