Liberty Half Eagles
1845-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 13-H. The date is noticeably further left compared to the rarely seen Variety 14-H. This partly luminous, yellow-gold half eagle is nearly fully struck, a quality seldom found among coinage from the North Carolina branch mint. A series of reeding marks under the eye identify the piece here-offered. In 2013, Doug Winter estimated 425 to 525 examples extant, 80 to 95 of them in all AU grades, and only 10 to 15 in mint condition. NGC counts 22 finer submissions, likely including several duplications (6/17).
